Missing one tooth? Several teeth? All your teeth?

With the variety of options available for tooth replacement, there’s no reason to live without teeth. Having missing teeth decreases self-confidence, can affect your ability to chew and eat healthy, nutritious foods and can cause discomfort in your jaw.

When you lose a tooth or several teeth, the remaining healthy teeth can shift position, altering your bite, causing TMJ or other jaw-related pain.

To stay healthy and attractive, you have plenty of options for replacing your tooth or teeth. If you’re missing one tooth or several teeth, you could consider a bridge or a partial denture. If you’re missing all your teeth, dentures are an option.

But the most comfortable, secure, natural-looking replacement for a missing tooth is a dental implant.

Why dental implants? They’re permanent! There’s no worrying that an implant is going to slip or move while you’re talking, chewing, eating or smiling. There’s no inconvenience of removing the denture or partial denture to clean it.

Dental implants look, feel and function just like your natural teeth. In fact, you even care for them as if they’re your natural teeth. You simply brush and floss.

Dental implants are permanent replacements for both missing teeth and their roots. So versatile, they can be used to replace one tooth, several teeth or all your teeth.

There are two components of a dental implant: the titanium “root” that is surgically placed in your jaw and the custom-designed porcelain tooth that is placed on top of the root.

If you have missing teeth or you have ill-fitting partial or full dentures, consider dental implants. They can restore your mouth to health, comfort, function and a healthy appearance . . . and get you back to living life with freedom and confidence.

Dental Implants Restore Confidence, Comfort and Function.

Do you wear dentures? Are you tired of them moving while you eat, causing pain? Are you fed up with worrying if they’ll slip while you’re talking or laughing?

If you think it would be easier to live without dentures, it’s time to consider dental implants.

Dental implants are permanent replacements for both missing teeth and their roots. They are strong and very natural looking. Best yet, they can be used to replace one tooth, several teeth or all your teeth.

The placement of dental implants is a two-step process. First, the titanium “roots” of the implants are surgically placed in the jaw. The roots are given time to attach to the jawbone and surrounding tissues. Once the tissues are healed and the roots are secure, the porcelain “teeth” are placed.

The porcelain teeth are individually designed to fit your mouth, complement your appearance and function comfortably.

Once placed, implants are cared for just like natural teeth. They just require brushing and flossing daily; no more inconvenience of having to soak dentures.

Having dental implants placed can be life changing. Patients who suffered with ill-fitting dentures now have natural looking, attractive, secure smiles that enhance self -esteem. Because the implants are so secure, patients are able to eat what they want; not what they can. They can chew without pain, improving their diet and nutrition. Knowing that teeth are secure, patients can speak and smile with confidence.

A variety of sedation methods can help calm even the most fearful patient during their dental visit.

Lots of people wish they could sleep through their dental appointment, rather than endure potential discomfort or the sound of the dentist’s drill.

Sedation dentistry is working to take the bite out of dental fear.

“Fear of pain keeps a number of people from visiting the dentist regularly,’” said Overland Park cosmetic dentist Dr. Alberto Castaneda. “Sedation dentistry helps alleviate that fear.”

Sedation dentistry has become a welcome option for patients who have endured prior bad experiences, uncomfortable procedures or who simply fear the dentist.

There are several types of sedation dentistry offered at Castaneda’s Overland Park dental office.

Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral conscious sedation allows the dental patient to undergo procedures while being in a state of reduced awareness.

“We prescribe patients a sedative pill, which they take about an hour before their procedure,” said Castaneda, a Overland Park implant dentistry provider. “By the time they arrive for their appointment, the pill has helped relax the patient.”

Upon arrival, Castaneda may administer more pills, depending on the effectiveness of the first pill and the patient’s anxiety level.

Although oral conscious sedation often is billed as a way to sleep through the dental procedure, this isn’t actually the case, said the Overland Park dental professional. Instead, the patient remains able to respond to their dentist. However, they likely won’t remember anything about the procedure upon completion.

IV Sedation
IV sedation is similar to oral sedation, except that the anti-anxiety sedatives are administered intravenously. IV sedatives take effect much more rapidly than oral sedatives. Once they take effect, Castaneda can administer the local anesthesia and begin the procedure.

Nitrous Oxide
Also referred to as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is another form of anesthetic commonly used in Castaneda’s dental practice. As a precaution, Castaneda advises patients receiving nitrous oxide not to eat anything for two hours prior to their dental appointment.

It is administered through a small mask the patient wears over their nose. The patient breathes in through the nose and out through the mouth to get the benefits of the gas, which typically set in within 30 seconds to four minutes.

Once the patient feels sedated and is relaxed, Castaneda can administer injections if necessary and begin treatment. Upon completion of the treatment, the patient is given pure oxygen to breathe for about five minutes. Unlike other forms of sedation, a patient receiving nitrous oxide almost always is able to drive themselves home from their appointment after treatment.

Sedation Dentistry Benefits
Sedation dentistry has been a welcome option to fearful patients because it can be used for a variety of procedures, including crowns, fillings, dental implants and veneers. Fearful patients often will know that they need these procedures done, but anxiety prevents them from scheduling the appointment. The longer the condition goes untreated, the more likely it is to worsen and require more in-depth treatment.

For example, a patient may have a simple cavity that needs to be filled. But because of fear, the patient doesn’t schedule the appointment to get a filling. If enough time passes, the tooth becomes more painful and what once could have been repaired with a filling now requires a crown or perhaps a root canal.

“It’s a downward spiral,” Castaneda said. “They don’t seek treatment because they fear a painful procedure, yet the longer they wait, the more invasive and potentially uncomfortable procedure is required to correct the problem.”

Sedation dentistry also is great when fearful patients need more than one procedure done. It’s often better for the patient if Castaneda can perform several procedures during one visit, rather than having to endure the fear of several follow-up appointments over the course of several days or weeks.

Dr. Alberto Castaneda enables fearful patients to feel more in control while in the treatment chair by providing a button that when pressed by the patient, stops the dentist’s drill.

SHAWNEE AND KANSAS CITY, KANSAS – Staples has the Easy Button, and now the Shawnee and the Kansas City dental office of Dr. Alberto Castaneda has The Dental Button.

The message behind the Easy Button campaign is that a simple button could help make life easier. Castaneda, a Kansas City cosmetic dentist, said The Dental Button does something even better- it helps prevent pain.

In a sense, The Dental Button puts patients in the driver’s seat when undergoing procedures they often deem less than pleasant, said Castaneda, whose Kansas City dental office added the device in December.

The Dental Button literally is a button the patient holds during a procedure that is a mainline to Castaneda’s drill. Press it, and the work stops.

Feeling too uptight at the sound of that whirring drill? Push the button and the drill comes to a halt. Need to take a moment while that cavity is being filled? One press of the button and it’s break-time for you and the dentist.

“It’s an empowering tool because it gives fearful, high-anxiety patients the feeling of control,” said Castaneda, who also specializes in Kansas City implant dentistry.

Psychologically speaking, that is a powerful feeling, said Paul Vandivort, a doctor of psychology. Psychologists have known for some time that the feelings of pain can be magnified in a person who feels helpless, or that they have no control over a situation.

This occurrence can be worse among men, Vandivort said, adding that there are good reasons why many people feel helpless or a loss of control when seated in a dental chair. People are in a vulnerable position: reclined; belly exposed. They don’t know exactly what is being done to their teeth, they aren’t able to stop the procedure and they often feel they are at the mercy of the dentist, should the procedure begin to cause pain.

The Dental Button quite simply addresses the patient’s sense of helplessness by giving them control of the drill. Give a patient the feeling of control, and the sense of pain lessens, said Castaneda, one of just a handful of Kansas City metro dentists using the tool.

Interestingly, Castaneda has found that most patients never use the button, even though they hold it throughout the entire procedure.

“There seems to be a great deal of benefit for the patient in just knowing they could press it if they had to,” he said. “Just that sense of feeling in control of the situation helps quell the anxiety level in most people.”

With that said, however, not all of the pain experienced in the dental chair is psychosomatic. Some can be legitimate. The inner layer of the tooth has fluid-filled tubules. When that fluid starts moving, it means pain. A drill running at hundreds of thousands of rpms can shake that fluid. That’s when the button really comes in handy.

“I certainly want to know if I’m hurting a patient, or if the anesthesia isn’t working,” said the Kansas City dental professional.

Castaneda said he hopes that as the word spreads about this tool, those who fear the dentist will give it a try. Studies have shown that about 20 percent of people fail to maintain routine dental check-ups because of fear.

But maintaining those routine cleanings and check-ups is important because it can have an effect on a person’s overall health, Castaneda said. Other studies have shown that poor dental hygiene links to serious illnesses including heart disease, diabetes and stroke.

An Idea Is Born
Dr. Michael Edwards, a Union, Missouri dentist-turned-inventor, created The Dental Button in 2009 after coming up with the idea of giving patients a drill shut-off button, according to a September 2009 broadcast on a St. Louis-area FOX network station. Edwards drew out his idea on a napkin, turned to a friend for assistance and the two created a working prototype within two weeks.

By late 2009, The Dental Button was in demand from dentists all over the world.

Dr. Alberto Castaneda reports favorable results among patients after introducing The Dental Button to his practice in December.

SHAWNEE, KANSAS – Shawnee dentist Dr. Alberto Castaneda recently introduced The Dental Button to his Shawnee dentistry practice.

The Dental Button is a device that sort of puts the patient in charge of their procedure by giving them the ability to stop the dentist’s drill during a procedure simply by pressing a handheld button.

“We get patients occasionally who suffer from anxiety when they come to the dentist, either because they fear pain or because they’ve had a negative experience elsewhere in the past,” said Castaneda, a Shawnee general dentist who has used The Dental Button in his practice since December with great results.

The Dental Button empowers fearful or angst-ridden patients because if they feel pain or just need to take a break, pushing the button stops the dentist’s drill. Castaneda doesn’t begin the procedure again until the patient gives the OK and he resets the system.

In the three months The Dental Button has been in his office, Castaneda has seen an interesting occurrence. Few patients bother to use it.

“There’s a great deal of benefit for the patient simply from holding that button and knowing they could push it if they needed to, Castaneda said. “It enables the patient to feel in control and that in itself helps quash anxiety for many people.”

Studies back up what Castaneda has witnessed at his Shawnee cosmetic dentistry office. When someone feels out of control in a situation, their perception of pain is heightened, said Paul Vandivort, a doctor of psychology.

Castaneda said he is pleased with how The Dental Button has helped some of his most fearful patients get through their procedures more smoothly and he looks forward to its continued use at his Shawnee dental care facility.

Kansas dentist Dr. Alberto Castaneda discusses why some dentists aren’t investing in technology that saves time, reduces pain, and saves patients money.
Dr. Castaneda uses the best equipment available by using best equipment available.

change to be kind to dentists

KANSAS, MO — Did you know that dental practices are not required to have the latest and greatest in dental equipment? Unfortunately, the general public does not know much about the technology behind dentistry. This lack of information becomes a crucial factor behind treatment. As in, many dentists don’t upgrade their equipment, and their patients are none the wiser. How much pain patients endure, how many procedures treatment takes, how your smile will look, long-term stability, and even the dentist’s bill are all effected by what technology and methods your dentist uses.
use benefits: lower radiation, etc.
elec drills: less vibration/noise = smoother
The truth is there have been many upgrades and innovations in dental equipment and methods in the past decade. Everything from drills to X-rays to braces has been improved to enhance the patient experience. Sadly, many dental practices neglect to invest in cutting edge technology simply because practices aren’t required to upgrade or the costs of upgrading are too high.

A perfect example of this problem can be taken from CEREC restorative technology. According to 1-800-DENTIST, CEREC (chair side economical restorations of esthetic ceramic) dental technology is only provided by 4,000 dentists across the United States and Canada. CEREC has been around for nearly 25 years and provides a bevy of benefits to restorative dental treatment for both the patient and the practitioner. However, this technology has yet to be widely implemented or standardized. Why? Because the technology requires a big up front investment.
do not use 1800 dentist as a resource.
CEREC, change cerec acronym

“CEREC is a wonderful tool for dentists,” says Dr. Alberto Castaneda, owner of Discover Dental Care, a Kansas dental care practice. “But some dentists choose to treat patients without this technology. On one hand, the equipment is expensive. On the other hand, it is a one-time expense and provides many advantages to clients and dentists. Unfortunately, this isn’t always enough to justify the investment.”
don’t use center in practice ref

Dr. Castaneda uses CEREC technology to perform treatments such as crowns, veneers, inlays, and onlays for qualified patients. According to Medic8.com, an online health information Web site, CEREC technology allows dentists to diagnose and prep the patient for the proper restorative treatment, create an impression of the mouth to craft a perfect restorative, and design and create a restorative.
CEREC doesn’t aid diagnosis. Just creates restorative in one visit

CEREC milling machines create natural looking porcelain restorations that are durable and perfectly formed to the jaw line.
Not precise to jaw line; precisely fit the tooth.

“With traditional restorative treatment methods, a crown, veneer, or other restorative could take several appointments to complete treatment,” says the Kansas cosmetic dentist. “CEREC technology cuts treatment down to one appointment. The diagnosis, oral mapping, and restorative crafting are all done in-house. So, dentists don’t have to work with and wait for help from a third party.”

Trimming appointments down to a single dental visit helps patients in several ways notes Dr. Castaneda. Not only does it spare patients from multiple visits, it eliminates the need for temporary dental restoratives while the permanent restoratives are being manufactured at a dental lab. Also, thanks to the more accurate mapping that CEREC provides, there are fewer problems with the restoratives.

Restoration treatment can also be expensive. Unfortunately, when patients have to undergo multiple appointments that increases the costs. Also, when a dentist uses a third-party lab to fabricate the restoratives that increases the patient’s costs as well. Also, dentists may charge patients for a temporary restorative while the lab is manufacturing the permanent restorative.
don’t charge for temporary!

“The only thing people can do to make sure they receive the best possible treatment is to be informed, because most dentists would rather treat you than refer you to a competitor with better technology,” says Dr. Castaneda, one of the top Kansas dentists. “The best thing to do before agreeing to treatment is searching the Web for treatment methods. A two minute Google search can save patients time, money, and grief in the long run.”
derogatory: nothing negative about others

In addition to providing restorative dental treatment, Dr. Alberto Castaneda also provides orthodontics and general and cosmetic dental treatment for every age group. His Kansas dentistry practice, Discover Dental Care, provides cleanings, oral treatment plans, braces, Invisalign, dental implants, and special services such as sleep apnea, snoring, and TMJ treatment as well.
-serves families and cosmetic implant and sleep apnea patients!

“Many patients simply inherit a family dentist from their parents,” says Dr. Castaneda. “This can work for or against patients. The best thing to do is to do some research on local dentists. Also, many practices provide free consultations. That is a great way to feel out dentists and discover who the right dentist for you is.”

Most patients today prefer tooth-colored restorations over the more traditional silver or amalgam fillings for their cavities. There are two main choices available for tooth-colored restorations – tooth-colored fillings and porcelain inlays/onlays. The type of restoration you need and your personal preferences will determine which option we will recommend for you.

Tooth-colored composite fillings are made out of a combination of resin, glass, and other materials. They provide you with a safe and durable restoration that closely resembles the make-up of your natural teeth. The resin is inserted into your tooth in layers to fill the cavity. A curing light is used to harden the material and bond it to your tooth. The bonding process strengthens your tooth and protects it from bacteria. The entire process will be completed in one visit to our office.

Porcelain inlays/onlays are frequently used in cases where the cavity is larger or where tooth decay has affected more than one surface of the tooth. First, an impression is taken of your tooth. Your impression is then sent to a dental lab where a master ceramist creates your inlay or onlay to custom fit into your areas of decay. A temporary is used while the porcelain restoration is created. On your second visit, the inlay/ onlay will be bonded to your tooth. Porcelain inlays are generally used to treat decay within the cusps of your tooth. Onlays cover the entire chewing surface of your tooth and are used to treat decay that extends over a larger area. Some benefits of inlays/onlays:

The porcelain insert is much harder than composite materials and can more effectively strengthen the tooth.

Porcelain restorations generally last longer than tooth-colored composite fillings and can repair much more complex cases of tooth decay.

Porcelain restorations require much less preparation or removal of healthy tooth structure.

Typically, inlays/onlays are considered indirect fillings, since they must be created in a dental lab, and the entire process takes two visits. However, Dr. Castaneda also uses the latest Cerec technology, which can create your inlays and onlays in just one visit.
