Bad Breath
Bad breath (halitosis) is a common problem for many people. When it becomes worse or cannot be resolved, it is known as chronic halitosis.
While some bad breath comes from your teeth, it can also originate further down. Decaying food particles and bacteria pass into your bloodstream and lungs, and the odor from this decaying matter is emitted when you breathe.
Good daily oral hygiene, including brushing, flossing and rinsing, can keep bad breath in check, whether you have your natural teeth or wear dentures. Decaying food particles remain in spaces between your teeth, and on your gums and your tongue, so more may be needed than a quick swig of Listerine.
Gum Disease
Gum disease can also cause persistent bad breath. Normally, your saliva cleanses your mouth of decaying particles that cause bad breath. A condition known as dry mouth, in which saliva production is diminished, can also lead to bad breath. Also, as you are probably aware, foods like garlic and onions can cause bad breath temporarily. Medications and cigarette or cigar smoking can also contribute.
While mouthwashes and rinses temporarily freshen breath, they only mask the real reason for the bad breath in the first place. The American Dental Association (ADA) acknowledges the effectiveness of some anti-microbial mouth rinses that are shown to reduce plaque and gingivitis. But, barring systemic disease, nothing takes the place of excellent oral hygiene habits that will reduce and eliminate that pesky halitosis.
